Two distinct structural motifs are essential for biomineraliza-tion. namely, the crystalline systems of insoluble alkaline earth metal salts and the bioorganic matrix that directs the orientation of the crystalline inorganic components. Two processesoccur in biomineralization and these are crystallization, which is directed into the interior of vesicles, and growth in the form of a columnar matrix, as is the case for collagen.
