This paper describes and assesses the results of an experimental study of a Rankine Compression Gas Turbine (RCG) used as an add-on system to an existing industrial solid fuel-fired furnace and steam boiler. The RCG is a new type of combined swam-gas-turbine cycle that has the capability of a rapid response compared to conventional combined-cycle systems. The novelty can be found by the addition of an air cycle that powers a free power turbine for electricity generation. A small scale (5 kWe) proof of concept has been installed in a wood processing plant in the Netherlands, comprising commercially available industrial turbomachinery components. Transient responses of 3-4 s for a load variation of 1000-4800 W have been obtained. It is expected that a shorter response time can be achieved when the total volume between the compressor and power turbine is reduced.
