The recognition of sequence information in linear macro-molecules underpins the whole of biology,most notably perhaps in protein synthesis through the operation of the genetic code,but also in the functioning of genetic regulatory proteins,of restriction enzymes,and of drug molecules that bind to specific nucleotide sequences in DNA.However,nucleic acids,when abstracted from their biological context,are simply random,four-monomer copoly-mers with no inherent order or information content.
