Ion selectivity is a prerequisite for biological ion channels to fulfil their function in cellular regulation and communication.[1] In biological ion channels protein subunits are precisely arranged to assemble ion-selectivity filters.[2] Predictable ion selectivity is a major goal for the use of synthetic channels in biological systems, for example, for the treatment of so-called channelopathies, diseases triggered by ion-channel defects. Although substantial progress has been made in the field of synthetic ion channels in the past decade,[3] ion-selective channels are still rare.[4], [5]
