Enantiomerically pure α-amino acids are extremely valuable chemicals in their own right. They are also the monomers of peptides/peptoids and serve as starting materials in the preparation of a wealth of enantiomerically pure pharmaceuticals, organocatalysts, ligands for transition-metal catalysts, and many other types of chiral compounds. Besides proteinogenic α-amino acids, which are readily available from natural sources, there is an increasing demand for enantiomerically pure non-natural α-amino acids, such as tert-leucine.
