One of my most treasured childhood photos shows me as a little girl in the1970s. I'm sitting on my grandfather's knee, studying a bird book, which lies open before us on an old oak footstool.I can't remember what bird I am pointing at, maybe something familiar like a Common Blackbird or European Robin, possibly a Blue Tit or Winter Wren, but it might well have been a woodpecker, so easily recognizable to a young child.
