Inflammatory responses are critical for the elimination of pathogens and maintenance of tissue homeostasis. At the same time, dysfunctional (e.g., exaggerated, sustained, or inadequate) inflammation is a primary mediator or critical facilitator of numerous pathological conditions. Understanding the underlying mechanisms that regulate immune cell initiation, activation, and resolution, both systemically and in a tissue-specific manner, has become critical to preventing and treating numerous diseases.
