Respiratory disease in chickens and turkeys has been associated with economic loss for many years. These problems are a combination of viral, bacterial, environmental and management factors. Rapidly spreading respiratory disease is usually blamed on viral infections such as infectious bronchitis (IB) in chickens and avain pneumovirus (the cause of turkey rhinotracheitis and so-called swollen head syndrome), complicated by secondary bacterial infection and exacerbated by poor ventilation or adverse climatic conditions.
