Soil conservation -a precondition for food security

The German cooperation ministry's strategies for sustainable farming in dryland areas. Poverty reduction, education and environmental protection and conservation of natural resources enjoy top priority in Germany's development cooperation policy. In the year of the FAO World Food Summit, the spotlight was placed on measures and programmes to secure sustainable and adequate food supplies for the world's fast-growing population. The emphasis on measures which will retain their effectiveness on a sustainable basis locks in directly with the soil conservation measures in agriculture, which are urgently called for in the AGENDA 21 Document adopted at the 1992 Rio summit.
