Three training systems were compared in a trial with 'Fidex Fuji' apple trees on M.9 T337 rootstock on a clay loam soil, immediately after digging up existing old apple trees at the Apple Research Station in the spring of 2009. Each training system was put into practice by selected experts for the system for training, pruning, thinning, and the rest of the management operations were carried out by the work force of the Apple Research Station. The number of fruits harvested at the end of the fifth season (2013) showed that the Solaxe system had 46% more fruit ha1 than the slender spindle system and 56% more fruit ha 1 than the Narita system. The planting distances for both the Solaxe and the slender spindle systems were 4.0x1.5 m, while for the Narita system 4x2 m. The Solaxe produced 75 t ha while the slender spindle produced 431 ha1 and the Narita system produced 341 ha1. The expected yield for the Solaxe in 2014 was higher than the other systems since it had more fruitlets in the spring of 2014 compared with the Narita and slender spindle systems.
