Biological performance of Olyset Plus, a long-lasting mosquito net incorporating a mixture of a pyrethroid and synergist

In the past 10 years, long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) have made impressive gains in the fight against malaria. The spread of pyrethroid-resistant malaria vector mosquitoes, Anopheles spp., particularly in Africa, threatens to undermine these gains, causing serious risks to public health. Therefore, new methods are urgently needed in order to ensure continued progress in controlling the transmission of malaria. Olyset Plus was developed to provide improved performance against resistant vectors. This polyethylene bed net contains 2% (w/w) permethrin combined with 1% (w/w) of the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). These chemicals rapidly regenerate after washing. Olyset Plus showed greater efficacy than a variant without PBO againstpyrethroid-resistant Culex quinquefasciatus in the laboratory as well as against Anopheles gambiae in extensive field trials in Africa. The efficacy of Olyset Plus was also significantly greater than that of a commercially available LLIN against field-collected pyrethroid-resistant An. arabiensis in western Kenya. This LLIN may be a valuable tool for the control, elimination, and ultimate eradication of malaria. Olyset Plus gained a WHO interim recommendation in 2012.
