The Yucatan Peninsula, together with Central America, has been considered the center of origin of papaya (Carica papaya L.J. The wide geographic distribution of wild accessions and the lack of collections in many areas of this region have prevented anaccurate assessment of their genetic profile and structure for genetic improvement purposes. In the present work, the genetic profile was estimated of wild accessions of C. papaya collected in Yucatan State using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Eighteen wild accessions and one commercial accession of papaya were analyzed with 12 combinations of ЕсоШ-Msel primers. Genetic variability among the wild accessions of C. papaya was estimated through pairwise comparison of genetic similarity. It was observed that the differences between accessions at the DNA level were large, with an average genetic similarity of 0.13, and showed a range of 0.005 to 0.59. A total of 1432 polymorphic fragments were generated and scored as binary data. The evaluation of genetic profiles among wild accessions of C. papaya provides useful information to estimate the potential for the use of marker-assisted for genetic improvement of C. papaya cultivars.
