Effects of amendment on the quality of cherry radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. radicula Pers.) under cadmium contamination stress

Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of amendment on the soil organic matter content, pH, microbial quantity, Cd uptake and nutritional quality of cherry radish {Raphanus sativus L. var. radicula Pers.) planted in two levels (2and 4 nig kg1) of Cd-contaminated soil in which different concentrations of amendments (0, 600, 900 and 1200 mg kg1) were added. The results showed that when applying 900 mg kg 1 amendment, the organic matter contents, bacterial numbers and total microorganism amounts of 2 and 4 mg kg-1 of Cd-contaminated soil increased by 21.0 and 18.7%, by 106.4 and 59.0%, by 82.7 and 43.4%, respectively, comparing with no amendment application. However, applying the amendment had no significant effect on the pH of soil, as well as the numbers of fungi and actinomycetes. The security and nutritional quality of cherry radish were obviously improved comparing with no amendment application. When applying 900 mg kg 1 amendment, the Cd contents of the edible parts of thecherry radish in 2 mg kg1 and 4 mg kg 1 of Cd-contaminated soil decreased by 50.0 and 35.3%, respectively. Furthermore, Vc, soluble sugar and dry matter increased by 7.6 and 9.9%, by 27.6 and 32.7%, by 13.3 and 11.6%, respectively. In addition, the crudefiber contents of the cherry radish can be reduced by the amendment. The results indicated that the complex amendment can obviously improve the quality of cherry radish and thus can be used in situ repair of Cd-contaminated soil.
