Selection of chestnut {Castanea sativa MILL.) genotypes in inegol County (Bursa province, Turkey)

This research was carried out during the years 2010 and 2011 in inegol County (Bursa province, Turkey). As the result of preliminary studies in Mesruriye, Maden and Hamidiye villages, 28 genotypes were identified and evaluated, which presented good sanitary status and produced regularly nuts of high quality. Fruit samples were taken from the selected genotypes during 2010 and 2011 to evaluate the pomological traits. Weighted-ranked method was used in the evaluation of genotypes with regard to suitability for fresh consumption (earliness and seasonable) and processed product. In all the evaluations, fruit bearing, nuts burr1, shell color, shell brightness, shell thickness, nuts kg-1, kernel color, peelability, wrinkless, precocity and taste traits were investigated. The results showed that genotype 16.05.027 had the highest total points, followed by the genotypes 16.05.024, 16.05.003, 16.05.018 and 16.05.004, respectively. In the 5 selected genotypes that have the highest scores considering the precocity, normal season and chestnut paste, the values of nut width, length, height, shell thickness, weight and caliber were 28.1-32.8 mm, 24.1-30.5 mm, 15.5-22.9 mm, 0.49-0.56 mm, 7.2-11.0 g and 87-135 nuts kg1, respectively. As a result of the study, thebest genotypes for fresh consumption and chestnut paste were identified and they are being recommended to be protected and reproduced in further studies.
