The rapid developments around the concept of the mine of the future and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) are evoking mixed reactions about jobs in what is a struggling sector. However, stalling or adopting what is inevitable at a slow pace will impose penalties on the economy on an unimaginable scale, with the consequences disastrous for mining towns, peripheral sectors and South Africa's economy.
