Graphical abstract Display Omitted Highlights ? Simultaneous removal of six different hydrocarbons by a silica-based aerogel has been tested. ? The adsorption of BTXs and three other PAHs occurs through a multilayer sorption mechanism. ? The removal efficiency of hydrocarbons, at low initial concentrations, is quite good. ? The sorption is mainly driven by hydrophobic interactions. ?
