Steering Entrepreneurship Among Rural Youths Impact of Ornamental Fish Farming Training

In India, the economy encompasses traditional village farming, modern agriculture, handicrafts, a wide range of modern industries, and a multitude of support services. India's population in July 2004 touched 1,065,070,607. About 72 per cent of India'spopulation exists in villages and 90 per cent of its rural population depends mostly on agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture, fisheries and other allied activities for their livelihood. As per record about 35 per cent of the population are belowpoverty line. About 62 per cent of population are capable of doing some productive work and they fall between in the age group 15 - 64 years. Due to population explosion on one side and shrinkage in job opportunities on the other, the educated youths arenot able to be engaged either in Government or in corporate Sectors. At this moment if their potentials are not trapped in self-earning enterprises like mushroom culture, spirulina culture, honeybee culture, horticulture, floriculture, poultry, dairy, pisciculture etc. then the situation will tend to be worse. Presently in aquaculture, besides shrimp farming, seed rearing and poly-culture of carps, culture of catfishes, freshwater prawn, etc., the unemployed youth can gainfully be involved in ornamental fish breeding and culture, which will give them not only a regular monthly income but also open avenues for self- reliance.
