CFTC proposes key swap market definitions

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Wednesday unveiled its long-awaited proposed definitions of swap dealers and major swap participants, but the impact on the energy industry, including physical and financial coal markets, may remain unclear for months. Companies that fall under either defi- nition would be forced to trade standardized swaps on exchanges and get them cleared, and could also fall under new recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
