AmCoal seeks permit for Galatia impoundment

American Coal is seeking a Section 401 water-quality certification from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for a coal slurry impoundment near its Galatia underground mine complex in Saline County. The Murray Energy subsidiary's application comes on the heels of a draft water discharge permit issued by IEPA to AmCoal earlier this month (PCT 1/16). A final permit decision is expected later this year.
