Developer sees economic potential in growing market of retired coal plants

A wave of coal plant retirements is opening up a growing market opportunity for those ready and willing to repurpose the sites, said Randall Jostes, CEO of a company that specializes in such transformations. The US has retired or made plans to close more than 300 coal-fired power plants in about a decade, and power generators are likely to continue the shift away from coal as the existing fleet ages. Jostes, head of St. Louis-based Environmental Liability Transfer, told S&P Global Market Intelligence in an interview that he sees a budding economic opportunity for sites often already well-situated near critical infrastructure.
