Export interest for US thermal coal drops off; little domestic spot activity expected in 2020

Last week’s export interest in the US over-the-counter thermal coal market dropped off Monday. Market sources hoped the buying and selling interest would continue since it did not trade last week, however no bids or offers were heard. The domestic market was likewise quiet, with one source commenting that he does not expect any domestic markets until summer 2021, or at least not much spot activity through 2020. He added that he believes all utilities have reduced burns and asked producers to cut back and work with them.
