London—Turkey’s total thermal coal imports took a nose-dive in August as consumption by the country’s construction sector weakened amid coronavirus-related restrictions, sources said Oct. 2. Turkey imported 32.6 million mt of thermal coal in August, falling 33% on month and 7% year on year, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute. Market participants said the sharp fall was due to cement producers halting buying, adding that this could continue for the remainder of the year.
