SPP Tracker: strong winds, cheap gas weaken power in december, forwards follow

Strong wind output combined with cheap natural gas to push Southwest Power Pool wholesale power prices lower in December, both month on month and year on year, and forward packages similarly followed natural gas futures lower. SPP North Hub day-ahead on-peak locational marginal prices, which were already low at an average of $22.40/MWh in November, fell another 1.6% to $22.04/MWh in December, which was down 18.3% from December 2018’s $26.98/MWh.
