JEA, FPL deal to shut 848-MW Unit 4 at Scherer coal plant by 2022

Florida municipal utility JEA and NextEra Energy subsidiary Florida Power & Light have reached a deal to shut down Unit 4 of the massive Scherer coal plant in Georgia by January 2022. The board of directors for Jacksonville, Florida utility JEA voted unanimously on June 26 to approve the agreement with Florida Power & Light, or FPL. Under the terms of the deal, the companies agreed to the retirement of the 848-MW Unit 4 with JEA’s portion of the capacity replaced by a 20-year power purchase agreement with FPL.
