Chinese scrubber technology could help illinois coal win back market share from PRB

Illinois, home to an estimated 38 billion st of mostly high-sulfur coal reserves, is promoting the use of Chinese scrubber technology in hopes of winning back market share from the Powder River Basin, according to a newly issued report from the Illinois Flue Gas Desulfurization Task Force. The task force, established by the Illinois Legislature in 2017 to study methods that would increase in-state use of Illinois coal, recommends the state attempt to convince Vistra Energy and NRG Energy, operators of a dozen coal plants in the state, to consider switching to the relatively new, ammonia-based technology developed by China’s Jiangnan Environmental Technology. In a presentation to the task force, JET officials said they have installed the technology in more than 150 projects worldwide, though none in the US.
