Total US coal train loadings averaged 93.5 trains/day in the week ended September 27, down 1.4 trains/day from the previous week, Surface Transportation Board data showed Thursday. On average, US coal train loadings have dropped 9% during the third quarter compared with the year-ago period, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics. Loadings from the Eastern basins have dropped the most, by an average of 11% year on year, “driven by sluggish demand, and likely also signaling a further drop off in Eastern coal exports, possibly related to a slowdown in Baltimore exports,” Analytics previously reported. From the year-ago period, loadings dropped 11.7 trains/day, the steepest year-on-year drop in 13 weeks.
