Duke energy sets 2050 net-zero emissions target, 50% emissions cut by 2030

Charlottesville, Virginia—Duke Energy aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations in six states by 2050, as part of a goal the company announced Tuesday to reduce its emissions by 50% compared with a 2005 baseline level by 2030. The company’s goal builds on a target set in 2017, when Duke Energy said it would cut its emissions by 40% compared with 2005 levels by 2030. The utility has cut about its emissions by 31% compared with the baseline level so far, according to Diane Denton, Duke Energy’s vice president of state energy policy in North Carolina. “We are making a cleaner energy future a reality for our customers and communities,” Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good said in a statement. “A diverse mix of renewables, nuclear, natural gas, hydro and energy efficiency are all part of this vision, and we’ll take advantage of economical solutions to continue that progress. In the longer term, innovation and new technologies will be critical to a net-zero carbon future.”
