Donkin coal mine reopening still uncertain, company lays off 18 employees

Kameron Coal’s idled Donkin mine appeared to be no closer to reopening and the company laid off 18 of Donkin’s approximately 130 employees on Friday two weeks after a roof fall. Nova Scotia’s Labor Department is treating the case with urgency as the December 28 fall was Donkin’s sixth since last July. The provincial agency is waiting for the company to submit a report about the cause of the fall and corrective actions it plans to take to prevent a recurrence, Scott Nauss, senior director of inspection and compliance for the agency, told S&P Global Platts in an interview.
