NiPsCO RFPs aim at replacing coal with ‘least- cost’ solar, wind

The power market in northern Indiana is facing a significant transformation as NiSource’s Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), through requests for proposals, expects to be able to replace 2,094 MW of retiring coal-fired capacity with about 2,300 MW of wind and solar generation. Some of the renewable power will be paired with battery storage. NIPSCO has said the objective of its plan is to ensure it can transition to the “least-cost, cleanest portfolio available.” NIPSCO has said it will issue three separate RFPs in 2019, one for wind resources, one for solar resources and one for thermal/other capacity resources, and that the RFPs “will satisfy capacity need in 2023.” On Wednesday, notices of intent with pre-qualification documents are due, while final proposals are due November 20.
