Fuel surcharge revenue for the seven US Class 1 railroads totaled nearly $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018, up 11.4% from the third quarter and up 64.4% compared with the year-ago quarter, data from the US Surface Transportation Board showed Monday. Fuel costs are typically one of the top three highest operating expenses for railroads. Fuel surcharges paid by shippers usually kick in when the average retail price of on-highway diesel fuel, as listed by the Energy Information Administration, breaks a certain strike price, which varies by railroad.
