BASF and the investment group LetterOne (Luxembourg) controlled by Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman, announced on Thursday that they have signed a letter of intent to merge their respective oil and gas businesses in a joint venture (JV). The JV would operate under the name of Wintershall DEA. Last month BASF confirmed that it was in discussions with LetterOne. BASF’s oil and gas business is bundled in the Wintershall Group consisting of Wintershall Holding and its subsidiaries, including the gas transportation business. The oil and gas business of LetterOne comprises DEA Deutsche Erd?l and its subsidiaries. Wintershall DEA would be one of the largest independent European exploration and production companies. BASF and LetterOne plan to list Wintershall DEA via an initial public offering.
