Petronas Chemicals looking beyond Rapid

Petronas Chemicals (PCG; Kuala Lumpur) is in discussions with several parties on possible joint ventures (JVs) that are expected to form phase two of the $16-billion Refnery & Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project at Pengerang, Johor, Malaysia. Petronas Chemicals’ parent, the energy group Petronas, signed an agreement in February with Saudi Aramco to take a 50% stake in Rapid’s refnery and steam cracker project for $7 billion and may widen the accord to include downstream projects. Under the partnership, Aramco will supply most of the crude oil require- ments of the refnery, while Petronas will provide natural gas, power, and other utilities. The Rapid project forms part of a wider Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), which will become a regional downstream industrial hub.
