ECHa lists 162 substances for further scrutiny

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki) says it has select- ed 162 substances for further scrutiny. The chemicals, which have been registered under the European Union’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) legislation, will be investigated by EU member states as part of ECHA’s annual screen- ing exercise. The selection is based on an automated computer-based screening that focuses on those substances with properties that make them potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction (CMR); persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT); endocrine-dis- rupting; sensitizing; or have specifc target organ toxicity following repeated exposure (STOT RE), ECHA says. Substances that possess one or other of these hazardous properties were then further prioritized based on uses that are likely to lead to exposure to humans or release to the environment.
