IRPC to invest $1.1 billion in aromatics complex in Thailand

IRPC Public Co. (Rayong, Thailand), an oil refining and petrochemicals production subsidiary of PTT Group (Bangkok), is investing approximately $1.1 billion in a world-scale aromatics project at its Rayong manufacturing complex. The new project, dubbed Mars, will use excess naphtha, toluene, and xylene as feedstock to maximize paraxylene (p-xylene) and benzene production. It will have capacity to produce 1.2 million metric tons/year of p-xylene. The benzene capacity will be increased from 114,000 metric tons/year to 495,000 metric tons/year. All the p-xylene produced will be exported while the benzene will be directed for both internal use and export. IRPC estimates p-xylene demand growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4–5%.
