Syngenta returns to growth

Syngenta (Basel, Switzerland), a leading agricultural chemicals company owned by ChemChina (Beijing), today reported a significant rise in sales and earnings in the first six months of 2018. Net income rose 32% to $1.23 billion. Higher interest costs after the recent bond issue and an increased tax rate following the US tax reform were more than offset by lower restructuring and impairment costs and gains from antitrust divestments. EBITDA at $1.7 billion was 1% higher than in the first six months of 2017 and up 8% excluding divestments. The EBITDA margin was 23.4%, compared with 24.2% in the year-earlier period with the reported margin reduced by divestments. Syngenta reported a 5% rise in sales to $7.25 billion. At constant exchange rates, sales were 2% higher than in the first six months of 2017.
