Asahi Kasei starts hydrogen demonstration project in Germany

Asahi Kasei says that it has started a demonstration project to pro- duce green hydrogen at its Hydrogen Competence Center H2herten at Herten, Germany. The project will convert electric power from wind energy into hydrogen and contribute to the development of a green hydrogen production system. Asahi Kasei states that hydrogen has become a focus of increasing interest in recent years, not only in the feld of energy storage (power-to-gas) but also as an important component of alternative fuels for automobiles (power-to-fuel). Europe in general and Germany in particular, with its ambitious goals for CO2 reduction, its withdrawal from nuclear energy by 2022, and its high share of electric power supply from fuctuating renew- able energy sources, have a high need for reliable power storage technology. Asahi Kasei has already succeeded in a long-term dem- onstration project on hydrogen production in Japan. The alkaline- water electrolysis demonstration project at Herten is the company’s second project in Europe aimed to develop an electrolysis system to produce green hydrogen using electric power from renewable energy sources.
