Ineos selects Marl for cumene project

Ineos has confrmed that it will build a previously announced cumene plant at Marl, Germany, within Evonik Industries' Chemiepark site. The plant will access existing pipeline connections between Ineos’s phenol and acetone production site at Gladbeck, Germany, and the Chemiepark at Marl, in addition to the BP refnery and steam cracker complex at Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Ineos says it has started a front- end engineering and design (FEED) study on the world-scale cumene unit, which Ineos previously said would be located in Germany. The project is due to be completed in 2020. The study is being carried out with a view to taking a fnal investment decision by the end of 2018. The new plant is expected to have a similar capacity to Ineos's cumene plant at Pasadena, Texas, which has 900,000 metric tons/year, and cost hundreds of millions of euros, Ineos said at the time of the original announcement last year. However, world scale in terms of new units in Asia and the Middle East is much smaller than in the United States. A 500-600 kt plant is likely to make more sense in Europe, accord- ing to IHS Markit data. Ineos has said that a new cumene plant will improve the security of raw material supply to the company's phenol and acetone plants at Antwerp, Belgium; and Gladbeck.
