EU court rejects Syngenta, Bayer legal challenge to neonicotinoids ban

Syngenta and Bayer have expressed their disappointment over today’s ruling from the European General Court in Luxembourg rejecting their separate challenges to the EU Commission's 2013 suspension of the use of neonicotinoid insecticides on bee-attractive crops. In 2013, the European Commission severely restricted the use of three neonicotinoids— clothianidin, thiamethoxam, and imidacloprid—after the European Food Safety Authority concluded that the chemicals were harmful to bees. The ban was extended in April 2018 to prohibit all outdoor uses, after further research confirmed the findings.
