The European Commission has requested the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki, Finland) to start preparing restriction proposals for oxo-plastics as well as microplastic particles that are intentionally added to any type of consumer or professional product. The request forms part of the commission’s strategy on plastics, which was published this week. Oxo-plastics, which are also known as oxo-degradable plastics, are designed to facilitate the degradation of polymer materials into smaller particles, and may potentially contribute to microplastic pollution, ECHA says. Oxo-plastics are conventional plastics that contain additives promoting oxidation of the material under certain conditions.
