Air Products to acquire coal gasification business from Shell

Air Products announced on Wednesday that it is acquiring Royal Dutch Shell’s coal gasification technology business, and a patent portfolio for liquid residue gasification. Financial terms of the deal, including purchase price, were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close “in the coming months,” Air Products says. The acquisition is part of a push by Air Products to expand it capabilities in coal gasification. Last year, Air Products formed two joint ventures (JVs) in China related to coal–to–synthesis gas (syngas) projects, with a combined value of nearly $5 billion. Air Products will hold majority control of the two JVs, both of which will involve the construction of new air separation units (ASUs).
