BASF testing chemical recycling of polyurethane mattress foam

BASF says it has developed a chemical recycling process for used polyurethane mattress foam and is starting pilot tests to produce polyol at its Schwarzheide site in Brandenburg, Germany. The recycling process breaks down flexible polyurethane to deliver the initially used high-quality polyol, from which new foam can be produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint, it says.
