Safety fires up flame retardants market

The worldwide market for flame retardants was valued at more than $5.93 billion in 2016. The largest consuming region was China, with a market worth $1.65 billion or 28% of the total, followed by Western Europe and Other Asia each at $1.18 billion or 20%, and North America at $1.06 billion or 18%. The overall flame-retardant market amounted to 2.25 million metric tons (MMt) in 2016, up from 2.0 MMt in 2013, and will reach 2.62 MMt in 2021, MS Markit says (chart). Total consumption of flame retardants is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 3.1% during the period 2016-21, according to IHS Markit.
