Sinopec starts building cracker, plans expansion in Hainan

Hainan Petrochemical (Yangpu, China), a subsidiary of Sinopec, has started construction of a 1-million metric tons/year (MMt/y) steam cracker and downstream plants at the Yangpu Economic Development Zone in Hainan Province, China. The company also plans to expand its refinery at Yangpu. The project will increase the refinery's crude oil processing capacity to 13 MMt/y. According to the company's website, Hainan Petrochemical currently has an annual throughput capacity of 8 MMt/y. The total investment for the two projects is about 63.5 billion renminbi ($9.3 billion). Estimated completion dates for the projects have not been announced.
