India to relocate $44-billion refinery, petchems JV

The Indian government has succumbed to pressure from local farmers and landowners and will relocate the country's $44-billion refinery and petrochemicals joint venture (JV) project from Ratnagiri in the state of Maharashtra to a different site, according to Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Land acquisition has been stopped at the proposed site at Nanar, a village in Ratnagiri district, 400 kilometers south of Mumbai, Fadnavis says. The project will now be built at a different location, Fadnavis adds. A state committee of government officials was set up in January to look for alternative sites for the mega project to neighboring Raigad district, some 240 kilometers north of Ratnagiri, still in Maharashtra.
