The arm board as a safe and cost-free echocardiography probe holder.

Four previous reports have described different types of echocardiography probe (TEE) holders. Brooker used an infusion pump bracket to keep the TEE probe in a fixed position during the examination. Spiess modified a commercially available TEE probe holder attaching a steel rod with an universal clamp. The design allowed the TEE probe to be secured, even when movements of the housing occurred. Michelsen used the tubing from a nasal oxygen cannula. The loop was formed by cutting and adjusting the strip around the larger knob, which secures the TEE probe safely intraoperatively. Kainuma recommended securing the probe by attaching the TEE handle to a holder of a hemodialysis filter.4 Although practical and meeting the requirements of intraoperative use, none of these TEE probes are routinely available or cost free.
