摘要

In 2002, Nanna Luthersson travelled to the small town of Lampang in Northern Thailand, as part of a small research team funded by Michigan State University in the United States, to carry out a DNA study on a breed of pony unique to the area. But, on arrival in Lampang, she was confronted with the devastating sight of severely malnourished and ill horses. As Nanna recalled, "When we arrived in Lampang we found that the horses were in a very poor condition. More than half had symptoms of malnutrition. The young horses had big heads, a classic sign of this. They could hardly eat and had difficulties chewing due to loose teeth. Older horses had a stiff gait and lameness caused by arthritis. They all had sore muscles and tendons, an increased risk of fractures, and many had malformed bones. It was heartbreaking to see the state that these animals were in and I knew then that I had to make their welfare my priority."
