Berry Promotion: The red raspberry industry is making strides toward a national research and promotion order

THE Washington Red Raspberry Commission is leading an effort to significantly increase red raspberry consumption in the U.S., starring with an application for a national research and promotion program that it will submit to the USDA this month. HenryBierlink, director of the commission, says the program will be limited to processed and frozen red raspberries based on interest, as well as the volume of berries produced for processing. With the majority of producers situated in the Pacific Northwest,annual production is 100 million pounds, which includes crops in British Columbia, Canada, Bierlink says. More than 40% of processed and frozen raspberries are coming in from offshore.
