Product shelf life and transit time remain top concerns for berry importers. When it comes to the transportation of highly perishable agricultural products, such as berries, shippers have the option of choosing between either air or sea transport; although transport via ocean is almost unheard of in today's market. A shipper's ultimate choice of transport is typically dependent upon several concerns, such as commodity shelf life, transit time and cost. Berries are known to only have a limited shelflife, even when they are picked, packed and transported properly via air transport. Just imagine how much more diminished a berry's shelf life would be if the commodity were put on a container ship making calls at several ports during its journey.
