摘要

American beef exporters are resuming normal breathing — and remaining as confident as they always have — as the widely reported squabble with South Korea over bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) begins to fade into the past. In late June, South Korea lifted its ban on U.S. beef imports after being assured of additional safeguards limiting imports of beef from cattle younger than 30 months, which are said to be less susceptible to BSE. South Korea, which had been the third-largest market for American meat prior to the ban, had disallowed U.S. beef imports since the first case of BSE in the United States turned up in late 2003. Limited imports were briefly allowed this past year and then suspended again when banned materials, such as bones, werefound in a shipment.
