Offshore buyers have many choices from the Golden State and consumers tend to like California quality, too. Importers looking for quality food or agricultural products to build sales — and profits — can most likely find just the right item in California, because the Golden State is by far the largest agricultural producer in the entire United States. The list of California's top 50 agricultural exports begins with almonds (see American Food and Ag Exporter Fall 2004) and ends with avocados. Sandwiched between the two is an incredible array of products, including wine, rice, beef, flowers and nursery products, strawberries, dairy products, artichokes, oranges, grapefruit, asparagus and dates. Going beyond the top 50, items such as Brussels sprouts, blueberries, turnips, squash and spinach, clearly signify that importers should take more than a passing glance at what grows under the warm California sun.
